January 2017: Beauty, Set, Go
This month’s Sephora Play! theme is “Beauty, Set, Go“, focusing on fresh new products and essentials to start off the New Year ~ “Happy You Year! It’s time for a fresh start: this January, detox and refuel your beauty routine with a selection of super-effective, ultra-hydrating skincare, makeup and hair care. We’re beginning 2017 with an innovative on-the-go-cleanser stick, game-changing moisturizers and more essentials that will keep you motivated all year long”
You still get a card for 50 extra points the next time you shop at a Sephora store (not online ~ I wish they would change that) Sephora did other different box variations and it looks like the moisturizer and foundation items were the variation.
This month’s bag design is different in a bad way ~ it doesn’t feel like cloth, has a mesh back and looks and feels cheap. I hope this is not the new direction for the bags.
Ouai Treatment Masque This is a .5 oz tube, so it should be almost enough for 2 treatments, as one treatment is .3 oz. I have short hair, so I am sure this has 2 treatments, but if you have long hair, I think you will barely get one treatment out of this tube. I have fine hair and this hair treatment is not suitable for it (even states so in the description), but it is a very runny conditioner, so I think this will not weigh down my hair. This is a restorative and healing hair mask that will leave your hair soft and smooth. A tip from Ouai is to work the treatment thru your hair before you work out or go to the spa. The heat will help this product penetrate deep into your hair and then after your workout, just rinse out. .5 oz RV $7.78
Description: This intensive moisturizing treatment works in minutes to repair damaged hair and increase resistance to future damage. It is made with artichoke leaf extract to seal the cuticle and protect hair color from oxidative degradation. It will help mend split ends. Made without parabens and phthalates.
- Ouai Smart Technology Complex™: Targets the most damaged areas of the hair to repair the hair cuticle, replenish moisture, and provide protection.
- Tamarind Seed Extract: The natural equivalent of hyaluronic acid, this extract promotes hydration while providing a velvety moisture barrier to keep hair hydrated.
- Smart Keratin: Bonds with the hair cuticle to smooth and repair damage.
- Artichoke Leaf Extract: Provides a sheer protective layer over the hair shaft to seal the cuticle and protect hair color from oxidative degradation (from UV rays).

tarte FRXXXTION Stick Exfoliating Cleanser This is an interesting product and I was most interested in this one ~ it is a gel stick that will not only cleanse, but exfoliate and you can use it as a wash off mask too. I decided to use it as a mask ~ I just twisted the base of the stick and then applied to my face. I noticed that there were little grains of dirt as I did this, as this does contain Diatomaceous Earth Microexfoliants, which according to the description are fossilized sea algae and will absorb oil and toxins, while gently exfoliating. I left it on for 10 minutes ~ it doesn’t really dry down to anything and then I rinsed off, massaging it in circular motions and then rinsing it with warm water. Verdict? Well, it is okay. I’ve used better exfoliating products, that is for sure. However, if you travel, this might be a good product to bring along, as it is in stick form and can be used as a cleanser too. I think it is very gentle and not harsh. It doesn’t have much of a scent that I can tell, but I love its purple-black color! Deluxe Size .22 oz RV $4.84
Description: A twist-up, three-in-one facial cleansing stick. Solutions for: Oiliness, Pores, Dullness and uneven texture. Get your quick Frxxxtion fix with this three-in-one exfoliator, cleanser, and face mask all in a portable, solid-to-suds stick. With a clarifying cleansing gel powered by the Rainforest of the Sea™ complex and suspended diatomaceous earth microexfoliants, the vegan-friendly formula draws out surface oil and reduces shine, while purifying pores for the deepest clean possible. The hypoallergenic gel stick gently sloughs away dead surface cells and polishes skin as it cleanses to fight dullness and pump up the radiance. Great for all skin types, it can be used on a regular basis without stripping skin’s moisture or left on as a treatment mask to absorb toxins and reveal smooth, glowing skin. Ideal for on-the-go use, this travel-friendly cleanser features a targeted, straight-to-skin applicator that can be massaged directly onto the face so you can get dirty and then sparkle clean all in one fix. Made without parabens and phthalates.

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better™ CC+™ Cream with SPF 50+ in Radiant Finish ~ Medium. Well, this got a lot of good reviews and it did win the 2016 Allure Reader’s Choice Award, so I decided to give it a try, even though I do not like IT Cosmetics that much and I am very picky about BB and CC creams. This product was created by plastic surgeons and dermatologists and it is talc and cruelty free. It is supposed to have full coverage and it is a color correcting, anti-aging skin care product. It has great sun protection at SPF50+. The scent is really pleasant, almost a citrus scent, BUT not only is this shade too dark, I hate its texture on my oily skin. It is too dewy and moist for it and it also just slides off my face. If you have drier skin than mine and love the dewy look, you might love this one ~ but this isn’t for me. Sample Size .135 oz RV $4.75
Description: This color-correcting cream provides full, flawless coverage and protects skin with SPF 50+ UVA/UVB broad-spectrum physical sunscreen. It is clinically shown to increase hydration, smooth texture, and enhance brightness. The breakthrough formula never creases or cracks and instantly camouflages skin imperfections including dark spots. Plus, it’s infused with an advanced antiaging serum made of hydrolyzed collagen, peptides, niacin, hyaluronic acid, vitamins, and antioxidants that work in harmony to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and pores to create a more radiant, supple, and flawless-looking complexion. Made without parabens and phthalates
- Collagen: Supports skin elasticity for a youthful, smooth appearance.
- Peptides: Help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and support natural collagen for the look of smoother, firmer skin.
- Niacin: Promotes a more even appearance and helps combat the look of blemishes and hyperpigmentation.
- Antioxidants: Reduce and protect against free-radical damage, which can cause skin inflammation and aging.
- Titanium Dioxide 9.0%, Zinc Oxide 6.3%: Sunscreen.

Top: Clinique in Black Honey ~ one swipe. Bottom: IT Cosmetic CC Cream ~ swatched and then blended. You can see how this is darker than my skin tone.
CLINIQUE Almost Lipstick in Black Honey This is a HG product for me ~ I’ve been buying this since my 20’s and I will never be without it. I recommend this lippie to just about everyone! This is my number one absolute favorite lip tinted lip balm in the world. I’ve been using this for eons and so have a lot of other women. This looks very dark in the tube, but it is a sheer, but buildable tint. The shade works for almost everyone and it will differ based on your own skin tone. Clinique sometimes comes out with different variations of the “honey” balm, but Black Honey has been around since 1971 and really hit its popularity in the 1990’s, when plummy-brown shades became really popular. This hybrid between a balm and lipstick is very moisturizing and protects your lips while giving it a beautiful warm raisin color. Deluxe Sample RV $9.00
Description: A universally-flattering, ultra-light lipstick in an iconic shade that anyone can wear because it creates a one-of-a-kind lip look on everyone. Not quite a gloss, and not quite a lipstick, this transparent lipstick fuses with the natural tone of your lips to create a lip look that’s unique to you. This sheer, emollient-rich formula glides on for easy layering. Made without parabens.

Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Whipped Cream So, yeah! I’ve been hearing a lot about Drunk Elephant, so I wanted to know what the buzz is all about. This is a whipped moisturizer, so whereas it looks really dense and heavy in the jar, it really applies smoothly and is lightweight. Absorbs quickly as well. It leaves my skin smooth and soft, and it doesn’t feel greasy or oily. It is also scentless too, which for those who are sick of scented facial creams, this is a nice one. However, I feel this is very similar to Derma-E Hydrating Day Cream and that is so much less expensive. I am glad I got to try a sample of this, but for my tastes, I think Derme-E is just as good, if not better. Sample Size 5 mL RV $6.00
Description: A whipped moisturizer to visibly brighten and improve firmness. The luxurious Lala Retro™ is thick and creamy without being heavy or greasy. With regular use in combination with Drunk Elephant cleansers, serums, and sun protection products, your skin will be balanced, hydrated, and healthy-looking. Made without parabens, sulfates, phthalates. Drunk Elephant formulations only contain ingredients that benefit skin health and assist the formulation, keeping them safe and making them ideal for even the most sensitive skin. You will never find sensitizing colorants, perfumes, or fragrant essential oils of any kind in their products, making them appropriate for every skin type. This product is cruelty-free and does not contain gluten. The brand is a supporter of IEF (International Elephant Foundation). This product is an Allure Best of Beauty award winner.

Well, I was exposed to some new items! I am glad to have tried out the samples of the It Cosmetics, Tarte and Drunk Elephant items, as I would have hated to purchase the full size ones ~ I am not overly impressed by them at all. The hair treatment is good for these cold winter months and my ends get damaged and I love, love love the classic black honey almost lipstick. Perfume ~ meh, rose. I paid $10.00 + sales tax (so it was still under $10.50 or something like that) and I received a retail value of over $39.00, which is almost 4 times what I paid for it. These boxes do contribute to Sephora’s points system, so every month, an additional 10 points, plus there is always a 50 point card in each box ~ just go down to a Sephora store and redeem.
Did you get this month’s Sephora Play! Box? What did you think of it and what was your favorite item?
