When a peeling gel is not ~ Skinfood Freshmade Pineapple Peeling Gel Review

This is my third and final review on Skinfood’s new Freshmade masks that I received from Jolse, a premier Korean online store, to review.  I had thought this was a peeling gel, as its name is Pineapple Peeling Gel, but nope!  It isn’t.  Which in a way, I am glad about that.

There are six Freshmade masks

They are all 90 mL and under $10.00 USD .   I chose Lemon, Apple and this one, Pineapple as my Freshmade selections. You can read my reviews on the Apple and Lemon Wash Off masks  here and here.

Description: Fresh made, fresh ingredient, fresh soothing care system. A mild peeling mask with a rich peeling cream like pineapple yogurt that hydrates skin and helps gently exfoliate.

Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) has an important role in anti-aging skin care.  It is rich in anti=oxidants, vitamin C and amino acids.  It also contains manganese, which aids in strengthening your connective skin tissues. Pineapple helps keep skin elastic and firm as it aides in collagen production and is also an anti-inflammatory, helping reduce redness and swelling from blemishes.  Pineapple is also a gentle exfoliator as it contains bromeliad, an enzyme similar to papaya’s papain.  This helps remove excess dirt, dead skin cells and oil, leaving your face fresh and clean.  Pineapple can also reduce hyper-pigmentation and fine lines, due to the vitamin C content and leaves your skin hydrated, soft and supple.

Lactobionic Acid is a poly hydroxy acids (PHA) extracted from sugar cane ~ this is a third generation peeling/exfoliating ingredient, like AHA and BHA, but it is less irritating.  It is just as effective as an AHA, but it is gentle and mild, as the molecules in PHA are larger and do not penetrate deeply into the skin.

This also contains some good fruit extracts that will help combat free radical skin damage: Cucumis Melo (cantaloupe)  contains antioxidants and Vitamins A and C.  Mangifera Indica (mango) also contains Vitamin A, C as well as beta carotine.  It helps hydrate your skin, improve elasticity and can prevent fine lines and wrinkles.  Psidium Guajava (gauva) is an astringent and is rich in Vitamins A, B and C.   Vaccinium Macrocarpon (cranberry) are a rich source of arbutin, which helps brighten your skin.

Oh and tons of acids, too! Salicylic Acid (BHA) exfoliates skin by removing dead skin cells and to help combat acne. It is also high in anti-oxidants, which tone and reduce inflammation as well as being an astringent, to control oil.  Salicylic acid is fat soluble, so it can really get to the oil that is inside your pores. Sodium Lactate is also an exfoliator and is a natural salt that comes from lactic acid. Citric (lemons & oranges), Malic (apple), Lactic (milk),  Glycolic (sugar cane) , Pyruvic (honey, apples, fermented fruit and vinegar), Tartaric (grape) are all AHA’s and will help exfoliate your skin, gently removing dead skin cells, brighten your skin tone, lightening hyper-pigmentation spots, refining your skin texture, making it soft and smooth, while reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

This also contains olive oil and glycerin to help moisture and hydrate your skin, while locking in moisture.

As I’ve stated before, the Freshmade products come in a jam jar packaging and there is a safety seal so you know if the product has been tampered or not.

This pale yellow sleeping pack contains .2 ppm of pineapple extracts and it is so smooth and creamy looking ~ it looks like pineapple yogurt and has that same texture.  Now, I discovered this was a sleeping pack because the front of the label shows a crescent moon and the words “Leave On Type”.  Also, when I tried to use this as traditional peeling gel, it did nothing! haha

This smells divine ~ like a pineapple smoothie ~ it is rich but not cloying and I really love the scent.  The mask is very creamy, smooth and it has a slickness to it when I apply this to my skin.  It has olive oil in it, which is an occlusive and that is why it is important to use other hydrating products prior to this step, as occlusives will trap existing moisture into the skin, not add any moisture.  Glycerin and water will both help add water into your skin, which are the first two ingredients in this product, but I wouldn’t just rely on that to bring moisture into my skin.  I have oily skin and I use other hydrating products, like beta-glucan and hylauronic acid, to bring moisture into my skin prior to using this sleep pack.

In fact, if I just use this product alone, my skin is a bit on the dry side when I wake up in the morning.  It only provides an additional increase of 39% of moisture, which isn’t bad but for a sleeping pack, you might want additional hydrating products.

I don’t add a lot of the product to my skin as it is so thick and it does leave a film on my skin ~ but that is okay, as I am just going to go to sleep anyway.  It isn’t sticky on my face, however, it just has that slick feel to it.  My face in the morning still feels a bit filmy but I just use a cleansing water first thing to remove my sleep pack and voilà!  My skin feels so soft and plumped up ~ the Korean term is chok chok (moist/bouncy) and I haven’t experienced any negative reactions from this product.  If I have blemishes, it isn’t because of this sleep pack ~ I know my skin pretty well and I’ve used this product when I have blemishes and when I do not, and it does not aggravate my skin.

Final Thoughts

I was bit surprised to find out a peeling gel is not a peeling gel with Skinfood Freshmate Pineapple mask ~ it is a sleep pack and I am glad of that now.  I found this product to have some really great ingredients, full of exfoliating and brightening extracts and acids ~ hence its name of peeling.  I haven’t noticed a major increase of brightening of my skin, but my face does look more refreshed and soft, with a smooth texture in the morning after I use this product.  The filmy texture might turn some people off, but a lot of sleeping packs have that type of feel to them and really, it is not an automatic indication that it is not good for oily skin types.  I have used products that have this texture before and so long it is an overnight product, I don’t mind it.

The one thing I would say is to use hydrating items on your skin before applying this mask, such as Graymelin Beta Glucan or cosRX Hyaluronic Acid Essence.  You really want to layer on those humectants before applying this mask, as once it is applied, it will lock in that precious moisture into your skin.  If your skin is really dehydrated, you might wish to also apply an oil that is appropriate for your skin type before the mask.

I really enjoyed using this mask, it smells wonderful and think it is perfect as cooler months approach.  For a “peeling mask”, this turned out to be a fantastic sleeping pack!  The only other sleeping pack in this series is the Coconut mask and all of the others are wash off masks.  Have you tried any of the Freshmade series from Skinfood?  Which ones did you try or which ones do you want to try?

You can purchase Skinfood Freshmade Pineapple Peeling Gel  at Jolse, as well as the other five varieties, for $9.33 USD.   Jolse also has free shipping and gives lots of samples too when you place an order with them.
