ATOCLASSIC: Real Tonic Masks and Cleanser Review

A few weeks ago, the lovely Dee at adoredee blog introduced me to Jieun at Kokofash to try a Hanbang Korean brand, ATOCLASSIC.  Imagine my surprise when I opened up my package ~ containing 8 masks from the complete line (2 masks per each type) and full sized products ~ not samples, but full sized Soothing Multi-Cleanser, Soothing Origin Essence, Calming Smart Lotion, Calming Intensive Cream 

ATOCLASSIC is created by a renowned Korean Herbal Medicine doctor family of 3 generations since 1912. The clinic, WOOBO, has been devoted to treating multiple skin diseases ~ on their website, there were about 30 types of skin diseases listed available for treatments ~ since 20 years back and they now have 15 clinics across Korea including the flagship in Apgujeong, Seoul. They first began developing skin care products from treatments for patients, with their Hanbang technology. Some of these treatment products are still in use within the mentioned clinics. The REAL TONIC line is the latest of skin care launched by ATOCLASSIC and it is named because it contains the superior amount of Hanbang – up to 14%.

Hanbang (한방) means Traditional Korean Medicine, and it includes botanicals such as ginseng,  peony, lotus root, mung beans, ginger, orchid, asparagus, bitter gourd, licorice, mugwort, milk vetch and golden thread and some ingredients will be fermented to produce concentration nutrition and benefits to your skin.  These ingredients have been used in Asian remedies for the health of the body and skin for centuries, if not thousands of years.   In fact, you will recognize many of these ingredients as the Western world has used herbals and plant extracts for centuries as well.

I posted all of these mini reviews originally on my IG account.  I try to keep up with mask reviews ~ sheet and wash off ~ and post them there first, so follow me on my Instagram account to get the latest mask reviews.  I do try and make a “digest” here at my blog once I complete a theme or brand series for searching ease.

Three of ATOCLASSIC masks ~ Lifting, Soothing and Whitening ~ have Tencel mask sheets, made from eucalyptus.   This material allows your skin to breath while absorbing the hanbang essence.  You can see how dense the weave is in this mask material ~ but it is soft and plush, with a bit of stretch.

ATOCLASSIC Real Tonic Whitening Treatment Mask   I didn’t get a good photo of me wearing the mask, but since I have more masks to review from this line, I will get one to show you the fit, which is really nice! The mask material is plush and soft, stretchy too. It is a tencel fiber mask, made from eucalyptus. This has several hanbang ingredients, such as nokdu or mung bean, which according to ATOCLASSIC, was popular among the court ladies during the summertime, as it has cooling and brightening properties. It also is an anti-inflammatory, which helps reduce swelling. This has a nice hanbang scent ~ it is not that strong, but you can tell it has that earthy scent ~ the essence is a milky white one and the mask has a lot of it (20 mL worth!) I removed the mask after 30 minutes and my face felt refreshed and cool, and whereas I didn’t see any immediate brightening effects, I did notice that my face looked more even in skin tone and any redness I had was reduced. ATOCLASSIC Real Tonic Soothing Treatment Mask Sorry for the horrid expression! I hate taking selfies ~ the things I do to show the fit of the mask!!  This is the Soothing mask and it is to help soothe (doh!), reduce swelling and redness from blemishes and other skin problems. The mask contains more than enough essence (20mL) and the sheet is made from Tencel sourced from eucalyptus ~ not too thick, not too thin. The scent is a bit floral, very light, but still a floral scent.

Description:  Whangryun (황련; Golden thread) is used in Hanbang to calm inflammation and to reduce fever. It is great for calming angry skin break out and has an anti-bacterial property to prevent further skin troubles. Whangryun is such a luxurious ingredient. Inside its stem is golden in color as well as the beautiful petals. Surprisingly, the root extract is also known to tranquilize one’s mood too. 

I love that these masks are hanbang ~ but they don’t feel the need to cram every hanbang ingredient into their sheet mask!! After 20 minutes, I removed the mask and saw that it did what it claimed to do ~ I have some bumps around my lip and chin area and those were reduced in size and redness. This is a very moisturizing mask, as my face was still tacky from the essence residue, so I recommend that these masks be used at nighttime, so that the essence can continue to work on your skin ~ usually when I have a mask this moisturizing, I will wipe off the extra essence if I use it in the morning.  RV $5.85 SDG  (approximately $4.33 USD)

ATOCLASSIC Real Tonic Lifting Treatment Mask This is their lifting mask and according to the description at Kokofash, this mask will help heal blemishes, help with skin’s circulation which will make your skin look more radiant ~ this is due to Angelica Gigas extract (Dangqui 당귀). This extract will nourish your skin, making it look healthier and more balanced, without clogging pores. The essence for this mask is quite a bit, this is a very wet mask and I was able to keep it on for over 40 minutes. After I removed the mask, my face was very moisturized and I was able to skip a few skincare products as it was so hydrating! My face looked more refreshed, pores looked smaller as this “lifted” the skin to make it tighter ~ I am getting the impression that “lifting” masks are not about lifting your face like a face lift, but more about making your skin more supple and taunt so that pores and lines are visibly reduced in appearance. I did like the overall effects of this mask and my face even looked brighter too!   RV $5.85 SGD (approximately $4.33 USD)

ATOCLASSIC All in One Real Tonic Perfect Treatment Mask  This one is my favorite ATOCLASSIC mask ~ Don’t let my side eye fool you, I love this mask 😍😍. The sheet mask material is called Geo Cell, which is made from carrageenan, konjac and locust bean and it is natural with a high moisture content, so it will adhere to your face better. And it DOES. This mask is silky smooth and it is dripping with serum ~ there is a lot of it in the bag too (25 mL), so I just take this thicker-than-water essence and place over the mask. The fit is pretty good as well, covers my nose area well and the sides too. It has that ATOCLASSIC scent ~ light, a bit floral-herbal. There is a slight tingling sensation, but it goes away within a minute.

This is a brightening and anti-aging mask and it does have some pretty good ingredients in here ~ niacinamide, bletilla striata and asparagus roots for brightening and reducing hyper-pigmentation, huang qi (milk vetch) is full of antioxidants and is an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.  Cimicifuga contains ferulic acid, which is a powerful antioxidant. In fact, there are a lot of TKM ingredients in here with anti-aging properties. After 40 minutes, I removed the mask and there was no sticky residue, just hydrated skin that felt really smooth, my pores looked smaller and my face’s skin tone is more even and brighter. This is a FANTASTIC mask. I love it!! The sheet mask material is amazing and so are the results. Two thumbs up for this mask.  RV 9.00 SGD (approximately $6.70 USD)

Close up of the mask material ~ you can see how the weave is more open than the tencel mask.  When this mask is full of essence and not dried out, like this photo shows, each of those open cells are filled with essence and this mask has a gelatinous feel to it.  It is more flexible and easy molded to fit your face and it has stretch!

ATOCLASSIC Real Tonic Soothing Multi Cleanser   Initially I was not sure about this cleanser ~ it is an amber colored gel with a very light hanbang scent and I didn’t think it was anything special. Until I used it for several days and realized this cleanser is pretty amazing.   It has a light foam, but its pH level is around 6 and it really can remove long wearing makeup.  Most gel cleansers aren’t that great with removing stubborn makeup and I am really pleased with this cleanser. 

This cleanser is enclosed in a slim long white plastic bottle with rose gold accents and a botanical print.  It has a pump applicator ~ very quick and easy to use and I only need one pump to cleanse my face.

I used several tough makeup items ~ Tonymoly Delight Lip Tint, a stubborn eyeliner, lots of mascara and a matte lip paint.   This cleanser pretty much cleaned up (hahaha) and only a trace of the Tonymoly lip tint remains.  My skin feels clean and refreshed, not stripped or dry, and there is a lingering  light herbal hanbang scent. I have oily skin and this cleanser does not cause me to break out in blemishes.

• Chamaecyparis Obtusa (Hinoki cypress) contains phytoncide and is supposed to refresh and vitalize your skin by promoting skin cell turnover at a faster rate.
• Codonopsis Lanceolata (Deodeo 더덕) is a mountain herb, aka Korean Blue Bonnet,  and contains antioxidants and skin brightening properties.  It also has anti-inflammatory so it is soothing and reduces swelling and redness.
  
• Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate is an amino acid-based ingredient that is a sulfate-free surfactant and is quite mild, and will cleanse while leaving your skin feeling supple and moisturized.
• Angelica Tenuissima contains ferulic acid, which is a powerful antioxidant and fights free radicals to prevent the signs of aging.

Final Thoughts

All four masks were fantastic, but the Perfect Treatment mask is exceptional.  I really love the Perfect Treatment mask and will have to purchase a box of these, as they really work well for my skin  ~ I love the fit, the essence and the way my skin looks and feels.  The cleanser is a sleeper for me ~ I didn’t think I would love this cleanser so much, but I do!  It is low pH, cleanses fantastically and has some lovely hanbang ingredients.  This will be another future purchase for me as well.  I am looking forward to trying out the other three products later this summer and into early fall.
