Unboxing December 2015 BirchBox

It could have been worse.  That is the mantra I am applying to December’s 2015 Birchbox offering to me.  The PYS was uninspiring ~ the dreaded Coastal Scents eye shadows in 3 choices of shades or a volumizing hair spray.  I bet you can guess which one I picked!! haha

My Box Revealed!

Informational Card

(MALIN+GOETZ) Clarifying Clay Mask     yeah!   I do like Malin+Goetz products ~ they have a great lip balm and I loved their grapefruit facial cleanser (low pH too).  This is an exfoliating clay mask, made with refined kaolin clay that will absorb oil and clean out the dirt in your pores.  It also has pumice to help exfoliate and remove dead skin cell and soothing anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory ingredients of witch hazel and arnica.  I am pretty excited to give this a try!  Deluxe Size  .5 oz RV $7.09

Description: Did you think that once you were past your teenage years clear skin would be a given? Urgh, we all did, but thankfully now there is this exfoliating clay mask from (MALIN+GOETZ) to treat oiliness and pesky blemishes—all in less than 10 minutes a week. Formulated for acne-prone skin but safe enough for sensitive, it contains refined kaolin clay to help absorb excess oil and draw out impurities, plus pumice to polish away dead skin. Anti-bacterial witch hazel and anti-inflammatory arnica extract add calming and cleansing powers, helping us achieve matte, breakout-free skin…finally.

theBalm® cosmetics Frat Boy® Blush/Shadow    You know, I love theBalm Meet the Matt(e) Hughes lipsticks, but I am not a fan of their blushes.  I find them to be too lightly pigmented for my skin tone.  However, there are many people out there that love theBalm blushes, so I am sure that if this shows up in a giveaway, no one will turn their nose up at it!!   Sample Size 0.57 g  RV  $1.41

Description: Score that rosy glow naturally with theBalm® cosmetics Frat Boy® Shadow/Blush. This talc-free, finely ground formula gives skin a fresh radiance that makes you look—and feel—forever young..

Coastal Scents® styleEYES Palette Social Eyes Sampler I wasn’t too pleased that this product was included in EVERY box, even if you picked the spray as your PYS.   It just means the shade you will get will be random. Sigh.  I dislike Coastal Scents Eye Shadows.  That said, I do like the fact that I got the silver/graphic shades instead of the beige/teal or the rose-gold shades.   These shades are actually great for the upcoming holiday season and parties.   I am tired, however, seeing Coastal Scents in my Birchboxes ALL THE TIME.  You can throw them at me, BB, but I won’t like them any better!!    Sample Size 2 shades  RV $3.00

Description:  The socialEYES palette comes with beautiful, deep neutrals for everyday looks, the formalEYES palette offers lovely nudes and rosy pinks for a big night out, and the glamourEYES collection boasts gorgeous, bold colors for special occasions (or any time you crave a little va-va-voom).

Ingredients: Talc, Mica, Mineral Oil, 2-Ethyhexyl Palmitate, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Polyisobutene, Kaolin, Aluminum Strach Octenylsuccinate, Phenoxyethanol, May Contain (+/-): Iron Oxide Black (CI77499), Iron Oxide Yellow (CI77492), Titanium Dioxide (CI77891), Iron Oxide Red (CI77491), Ultramarine Blue (CI77007), FD&C Yellow 5 Al Lake (CI19140), Iron Blue (CI77510), Hydrated Chromium Oxide Green (CI77289), Carmine (CI75470)

Serge Normant Dream Big Instant Volumizing Spray   This is my PYS choice ~ I honestly don’t care about it being Serge Normant as that isn’t a brand I will go out of my way to purchase, but I do love a volumizing spray, so it was a no brainer that I chose this.   This is a great size to throw in my purse and this doesn’t have a white cast to it like a dry shampoo.  It does have a generic hairspray scent, so it  isn’t the nicest scent in the world.  I am interested in seeing how well it performs on my fine, straight hair!   Sample Size 1.8 oz  RV $10.00

Description: We’ll let you in on a little secret: Stars like Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker don’t wake up with that effortlessly tousled look. Their secret weapon? Celebrity hair guru Serge Normant. We may not be Hollywood royalty ourselves, but with this spray, we can still get voluminous, drool-worthy hair like our favorite leading ladies. Now if only we could get our hands on their shoes.

Ingredients: Hydrofluorocarbon 152A, Butane, SD Alcohol 40-B, Disiloxane, VP/VA Copolymer, Zeolite, Glycerin, Triethyl Citrate, PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone, Polyquaternium-59, Butylene Glycol, Fragrance, C10-40 Isoalkylamidopropylethyldimonium Ethosulfate, Dipropylene glycol, Water, Hydrolyzed Lupine Seed Extract, Quaternium-95, Propanediol.

L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil Nourishing Masque  Oh Birchbox… I have fine, straight and oily hair.  I really do not need these types of products and yet you keep sending them to me :(   This product probably will weigh my fine hair down.   I don’t mind that this is a L’Oreal product, I like L’Oreal ~ I guess I will use this after I color my hair as it will give my hair the conditioning it needs.   And what is MYTHIC about this?  It better be of Viking Status!!  This has a lot of nourishing oils in it and it seems really easy to use ~ just leave in for 3 minutes to clean, damp hair and rinse out.  At least it isn’t a 30 minute hair treatment!!  I hate those ~ haha . This is a huge sample too and it does smell nice.  Deluxe Sample 2.5 oz  RV $13.81

Description: This paraben-free deep conditioning treatment balances your natural oil levels by targeting dehydrated ends and nourishing them back to health. The argan, avocado, cottonseed, and grapeseed blend creates a glossy effect without weighing hair down. So no matter how you spend your days, you’ll look fabulous doing it.

Ingredients: Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Candeila Cera, Amodimethicone, Cetyl Esters, Isopropyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Persea Gratissima Oil (avocado Oil), Vitis Vinnifera Seed Oil (grape Seed Oil), Trideceth-6, Limonene, Chlorhexidine Digluconate, Cetrimonium Chloride, Hexyl Cinnamal, Coumarin, Linalool, Benzyl Alcohol, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hydroxycitronellal, Argania Spinosa Oil, Gossypium Herbaceum (cotton seed) Oil, Amyl Cinnamal, Fragrance  cosDNA.com analysis

I also received a $10.00 coupon to use at the Birchbox store.   I am a bit miffed as the way it was promoted was that it was not a coupon code but a gift card.   Coupon codes cannot be stacked and I think that was a bit shady of Birchbox to do that. Welll, it isn’t the worst Birchbox in the world, but it isn’t the greatest.   I am pretty happy with the Malin+Goetz and Serge Normant products.   I will give the L’Oreal masque a try as a deep conditioner after I color my hair, but it just seems so wasted on my hair type.   I did purchase an add-on product for this month as well ~ Umbra Toto Storage Box in Aubergine for $25.00

I really like this box and it has a side tray that slides open and reveals storage underneath. I figure this will be great for all those little, fiddly bits of skincare and makeup (like the stuff I get from Birchbox! haha) to store.  I might have to go back and purchase more of these once they come back in stock as I really love the design, with its top handle.   This would be great also a desk caddy.  Since I purchased an add-on, I received a free standard Baggu bag in a black and white dog print.  This has a value of $9.00.  I really love Baggu bags as they are ec0-friendly, they fold up nice and compact and when unfolded, HOLD a ton of stuff!

This month’s RV of items is worth $45.31, with the $10.00 coupon.  With my add-on and Baggu bag, the value ticks up to $84.31, with a total cost of $35.00 to me ($10.00 for the box and $25.00 for the storage box)  I also reviewed and shared my box, so I got 60 Birchbox points ~ every 100 points is worth $10.00 in their shop.  Please fill out your review ~ it is just the questionnaire part and you will get 10 points for each product!
