Unboxing August 2015 BirchBox

Last month’s  Birchbox was fabulous, as it contained two hair products that were perfect for my hair type!   I wonder if BB can have a repeat encore this month.   Based on the Birchbox PYS and Plus this month, I went with the dry shampoo as my PYS and added the Mask pack as my Plus item.    Let’s see what I got this month

This month’s theme is Soak It Up ~ Stay cool and look gorgeous with this month’s samples—and make the most of summer’s last gasp.

My Box Revealed!

Air Repair Complexion Boosting Moisturizer Okay, this is a moisturizer and it was a PYS choice, and I purposely didn’t pick it as I am not interested ~ but I still got it!  It is a gel-cream lotion and it has no odor nor leaves a tacky feeling being.  Other than that, the sample is too small for me to make a major judgement call.  The ingredient list seems to be similar to products I currently use now ~ aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, allantoin, green tea, calendula, lavender ~ so I am sure this is a good moisturizer, but I have many like this already.  The reviews on Birchbox seem to be overwhelmingly positive!   Sample Size 7 mL Value $2.40

Description: We’ll admit it: Our case of wanderlust shows no signs of abating. We could, however, do without the dulling effects travel (and stress and dry weather and…) has on our complexions. That’s why we never go anywhere without this intensely rejuvenating face cream. It’s packed with antioxidants and humectants to hydrate and revitalize skin, so that even at our most jet-lagged we’re still rocking a radiant complexion.

Ingredients: Purified Water, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sorbitol, Hyaluronic Acid, Polysorbate-60, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ethyl Hexyl Palmitate, Glyceryl Stearate, Capric Caprylic Triglycerides, Carbomer, Panthenol, Ceramide 3, Cloudberry Seed Oil, Heat Shock Proteins, Flax Seed Oil, Rosehip Oil, Borage Oil, Allantoin, Sodium PCA. Extracts of Calendula, Green Tea, Chamomile, White Tea, Black Tea, Lavender, Arnica. Phenoxyethanol, Ethyl Hexyl Glycerin, Fragrance.cosDNA.com analysis

Balance Me Congested Skin Serum  This serum size may seem small, but it is to be used in a targeted fashion on your blemishes, so a little goes a long way.   I am probably more excited about this product than any of my other samples in this month’s box.  This is a very lightweight serum, a creamy watery texture, that you apply to your blemishes to help clear them up.  I am really happy I received this, as I do say I have oily skin!   This has a really nice scent to it ~ reminds me of a citrus-pine-lavender scent and very spa-like too.  However, based on the reviews, the scent is either something you love or hate.   Believe it or not, this is actually 1/2 the size of the full size version!  I will see how this works, as this is a nice alternative to harsher acne medications.   Deluxe Size 7 mL   Value $14.00

Description:  Even the most diligent daily skin routine can’t thwart all blemishes. Fortunately, this lightweight, “on the spot” treatment has us covered in a skirmish with a wayward pimple—or a prolonged battle against stubborn trouble areas. With a divine scent and smooth application, this calming serum refines pores and balances skin without drying, and is free of parabens or sulfates.

Ingredients: Aqua, Oryza sativa (rice) bran oil, Glycerin, Moringa oliefera (moringa) oil, Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf extract***, Iris florentina (iris) root extract, Papaver rhoeas (corn poppy) flower extract, Abies picea (spruce knot) extract, Anthemis nobilis (Roman chamomile)*, Lavandula angustifolia (lavender)*, Litsea cubeba (litsea may chang)*, Citrus limonum (lemon)*, Kunzea ericoides (kanuka)*, Eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus)*, Syzygium aromaticum (clove bud)*, Chondrus crispus (carrageenan) seaweed gum, Sclerotium gum, Sorbitan laurate, Polyglyceryl-4 laurate, Dilauryl citrate, Benzyl alcohol, Dehydroacetic acid, Citric acid, Limonene**, Linalool**, Geraniol**, Citral**, Citronellol**, Eugenol** *natural pure essential oil **naturally occurring in essential oils ***certified organic ingredient cosDNA.com analysis

LAQA & Co. Cheeky Lip Tint in Cray Cray   I normally love LAQA lip products, as they do have some nice shades and they always have a nice minty taste to them.  However, this lip product is in a coral-peach, and I really TRIED to like it on my lips, but it just doesn’t work.  Also, this has no minty taste to it either :(  Quite honestly, none of the colors in this collection (Cray-Cray ~ coral peach, Mixtape ~ ruby rouge, and Humble Brag ~ blush pink) appeal to me as lip colors. However, this shade looks really nice blended out and since this is also a cheek tint, I will use this as a blush.  I am getting a lot of coral shades this year for blushes!  No mas!  Deluxe Sample .03 oz  Value $6.67

Description:  A soft, matte crayon with easy application and gorgeous color! The multi-tasking creamy formula works as both a cheek and lip color, and its super easy to apply – just swipe on for lips; and swipe + blend on cheeks for radiant color.

R+Co DEATH VALLEY Dry Shampoo This was my PYS and the 2nd item in my box that I am most excited about.   I love dry shampoos ~ not that I don’t wash my hair daily, I do ~ but dry shampoos are a great way to texturize your hair if you have fine, straight hair.  I found that this dry shampoo does not leave any white powder behind, which is rare with dry shampoos, so that is a major plus.  It also has a really great scent to it  ~ reminds me of coconuts, as lot of dry shampoos smell so chemical-like.   It is a very cooling and refreshing spray on your scalp too!   This could be a “future purchase” item in my BB list.  Deluxe Size 1.6 oz  Value $7.37

Description: Give your hair a shot of Death Valley whenever you want and it will liven right up. Rice Protein, sourced from Brazil, this protein moisturizes and improves hair’s elasticity. Vitamin E, rich in antioxidants, this ingredient strengthens and nourishes the hair, restoring luster and shine. Silica, this ingredient removes and absorbs excess oil.Pro-Vitamin B5, this conditioning agent thickens and builds volume.

Ingredients: Butane, Propane, SD Alcohol 40-B (Alcohol Denat.), Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Silica, Cyclomethicone, Tocopherol, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Aminopropyl Phenyl Trimethicone, Panthenol, Parfum/Fragrance, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Citral, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Limonene, Linalool  cosDNA.com analysis

Supergoop!® Forever Young Hand Cream with Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40 Seriously, this is the longest name for a product with the tiniest sample size.  The name is bigger than the sample.  Not only do I dislike Supergoop because Birchbox KEEPS SENDING me this damn product line, but Supergoop’s samples are so frickin’ small that I have to wonder if they are just money grubbing and greedy that you have to purchase the full size expensive product (cause you cannot tell if a product works if the sample is so small) or are just having us on as a joke and insulting us with their tiniest samples in the world.   Sigh.  This is a hand cream, too, so I thought it would be an actual deluxe size tube of hand cream ~ you know, maybe 1 oz?   This sample is good for one and half applications, and it isn’t enough for me decide if I like it or not.  Anyway, what I can tell ~ it has no scent (plus), leaves a bit of a white residue because it is a sunscreen (minus).   That is about it.  Tiniest Sample in the World  .14 oz Value .47 cents

BioRepublic Skincare Aloe Rescue Revitalizing Fiber Mask  Value $4.83

Description: We’re sticklers about sun protection, but even with the best sunscreen regimen, a day in the sun can leave our skin feeling seriously dry and dehydrated. Instead of glopping on more moisturizer, we turn to serum-infused sheet masks for immediate hydration. Packed with healing aloe vera, plumping phytocollagen, and nourishing vitamin E, these biodegradable fiber sheet masks are just what our dry skin needs, especially after sun exposure. They’re free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, and aren’t tested on animals, so we can breathe a little easier—even if we forgot our sunscreen that day.

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, PEG/PPG‐17/6 Copolymer, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Natto Gum, PEG‐14M, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Xanthan Gum, Panthenol, Illicium Verum (Anise) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinesis Leaf Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Disodium EDTA, Allantoin, Erythritol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, PEG‐60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance  cosDNA.com analysis

Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Water-Full Hydrogel Mask Value $9.00

Description: You might think you’re strong just because you survived a CrossFit class, but you’re nowhere near as strong as hyaluronic acid: The tiny molecule can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. Not much of an ego boost for us, but it is a major hydration boost for this innovative mask. The restorative formula is infused with—you guessed it—hyaluronic acid, to transform your skin from parched and dry to refreshed and. Plus, cranberry fruit and olive leaf extracts help improve elasticity and minimize fine lines.

Ingredients: Water, Acrylates Copolymer, Glycerin, Mineral Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate, Agar, Sodium Hydroxide, Aluminum Glycinate, Polysorbate 60, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Leaf Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Methylparaben, Adansonia Digitata Seed Extract, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract,Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract, Fragrance  cosDNA.com analysis

Karuna Exfoliating Treatment Mask This one looks like it will be my favorite as it is for oily skin.  Karuna must be breaking thru the American market, as I received a free eye mask in one of my latest Sephora purchases, which I really like a lot!  Value $7.00

Description: Let’s get down to brass tacks: One of the most common skincare faux pas we make is not exfoliating enough. And while there’s something satisfying about a good scrub, we’re rather partial to this easy-to-use exfoliating mask. It does the grunt work for us—while we take a 20-minute breather.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Niacinamide, Glycosyl Trehalose, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Salicylic Acid, Acacia Senegal Gum, Arginine, Isoceteth-20, Allantoin, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Polysorbate 20, Carbomer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance (Parfum)  cosDNA.com analysis

Real Chemistry Environmental Rescue Mask    OMG the RV on this mask!!  Value $22.67

Description: All week, we’ve been fantasizing about the moment when we can light a few candles, relax on the sofa with a goblet of red wine (à la Olivia Pope), and catch up on Scandal. We didn’t think it was possible to improve on our destressing daydreams—until we came across this cooling mask. The presoaked fabric releases two-thirds of an ounce of serum, infusing skin with powerful antioxidants that give it a fresh glow (and reduce the appearance of fine lines, to boot) After wearing it for 20 minutes, we look and feel as though we’ve spent the last week relaxing rather than at our desk.

Ingredients: Water, Butylene glycol, Jojoba oil, Cellulose, Arbutin, Bisabolol, Hyaluronic acid, Menthol, Collagen, Metallothionein, Diazonlidinyl urea, Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, Hirudin, Fabric 60/40 Cotton/Polyester Blend  cosDNA.com analysis

This mask sampler is such a great deal, I purchased TWO more of them.  You cannot beat that price for these fancy masks!  I rarely get masks that are over $4.00, and to have a mask which is worth almost $23.00 is just amazing to me!

This month had a major surprise like for me, which is the Balance Me product and I am pretty happy to get that.  I do really like R+C0 Death Valley Dry Shampoo and I probably will be purchasing a full size.  The Air Repair and lip/cheek tint are okay, but I wouldn’t purchase them and the Super Goop is a waste of space in my box.  I REALLY loved my Birchbox Plus add on and that is a fantastic deal.  I will continue to purchase that mask sampler until it is out of stock, because I would never purchase a one time use mask for $23.00.   I did get my money’s worth on that sampler as I received $45.00 worth of masks for $15.00.   I paid $10.00 for my box and received a value of $30.91.
