Unboxing June 2015 BirchBox

Last month’s Birchbox was craptastic.  Let’s see if June broke that record for being craptastic or if it was only a stinker….

June’s theme is  Say Yes! Adventure is a state of mind.  It’s about dreaming beyond the horizon, and letting go of the word “no”.  What’s on your list?  Scuba diving with sharks?  Sleeping under the stars (hey, your backyard counts)? Here’s to adventures big and small, near and far.

My Box Revealed!

Skyn Iceland Eye Gels, Marcelle Eyeliner, Dr Jart+ Premium BB Cream, Temple Spa Good Hair Shampoo, Temple Spa In Good Condition Conditioner, Pura Vida Lace Headband

Informational Card

Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels I love Skyn Iceland products, as they are very refreshing and cooling.  I know a certain “reviewer” who has her own beauty skincare line (*cough* paula’s choice *cough*) hates them, but Skyn Iceland works very well for my skin type, thank you very much.  I love their eye gels ~  I find them to be very refreshing, cooling and they do temporarily brighten the skin under my eyes, where I have applied them.  Skyn Iceland uses Arctic Cloudberry as one of their ingredients, which contain Vitamin A, C and E, Omega 3 and Omega 6, carotene and antioxidants.  They are reported to have twice as much Vitamin C as oranges.  Cloudberries help fight and repair  free radical damage  1 pair of eye gels Value $3.75

Description: As a glacier-dotted island just this side of the Arctic Circle, Iceland has plenty of experience with cool. So it’’s no surprise that this homegrown brand’’s cooling eye gels are unbeatably refreshing. They reduce the appearance of puffiness and fine lines while working to brighten, firm, and soothe delicate undereye skin. An exclusive blend of Icelandic glacial water, Arctic cloudberry and cranberry seed oils, pure molecular oxygen, and six essential minerals delivers much-needed nutrients, energy, and healthy fats, helping to protect skin and restore its healthy glow. Gingko bilboa leaf extract reduces puffiness and dark circles by improving blood flow, while hydrolized elastin tones and firms skin.

How To Use: Remove backing of eye gels and apply one under each eye. Wait ten minutes, then gently peel away. Use weekly or as needed (like after a long day at work or before that wedding your ex is going to). Put them in the fridge five minutes before applying for an extrafresh pick-me-up.

Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner in Indigo We were supposed to get an Eyeko Liquid Fat Eyeliner this month in black, but for custom reasons (?Really, Birchbox?  You should have had these products in your warehouse before saying we were going to get it) we didn’t receive it.  So, this mini eyeliner by Marcelle was replaced.  I got the shade that I didn’t want ~ not that I don’t like a nice navy blue, but I have similar eyeliner in this color.  I would have liked any of the other three, as they looked more interesting to me.  Oh well…    One Mini 1.2 mL Value $4.50

Description: Marcelle’s Waterproof Eyeliner goes on smoothly and stays put—so sweat or tears don’t stand a chance. And with this range of vibrant colors, you can vary your look day-to-day while using the same top-notch formula. These mini pencils are supremely blendable, but once the formula sets, it doesn’t budge. Enjoy four rich hues: Mulberry, Indigo, Electric Blue, and Blue Lagoon.

Ingredients:  cyclopentasiloxane, synthetic wax, isododecane, polybutene, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, ceresin, ozokerite, cera microcristallina/microcrystalline wax/cire microcristalline, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, tocopherol, ascorbyl palmitate  may contain: iron oxides, mica, ultramarines, titanium dioxide, ferric ferrocyanide, carmine

Dr Jart+ Premium BB Cream SPF 45  in 02 Medium-Deep  Hate BB creams to begin with, but the color ~ MEDIUM-DEEP?  Come on, Birchbox, at LEAST try to match my skin tone here ~ I have light-medium skin that is warm toned and the former is clearly marked in my profile at Birchbox.  It is so obvious that medium-deep vs light-medium aren’t the same.   If you want me to love BB creams, you have to match my skin tone first so I can actually use it.    Sample Size .17 oz  Value $4.42

Description: A four-in-one primer, moisturizer, sunscreen, and treatment serum, the formula helps you cut down on the beauty cabinet clutter. Plus, this BB cream has advanced brightening properties and anti-aging benefits. This balm is a slightly darker version of the brand’s cult-favorite Premium Beauty Balm, perfect for medium skin. It’s loaded with adenosine to improve skin’s elasticity, and arbutin to brighten and even out skin tone. An antioxidant bio-peptide complex provides anti-aging properties and promotes collagen production, while titanium dioxide and zinc oxide add broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

IngredientsWater, Cyclopentasiloxane, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Glycerin, Phenyl Trimethicone, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Hexyl Laurate, Dipropylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Arbutin, Cyclohexasiloxane, Butylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Magnesium Sulfate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Stearic Acid, Calcium Stearate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Propylene Carbonate, Polysorbate 80, Propylene Glycol, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Talc, Tocopheryl Acetate, Adenosine, Alcohol Denat., Lecithin, rh-Oligopeptide-1, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Steareth-20, Chrysin, N-Hydroxysuccinimide, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Iron Oxides cosDNA.com analysis

Temple Spa Good Hair Day Shampoo   Well, Birchbox managed to get a shampoo correct for my hair type and how often I wash it.  This shampoo is recommended for frequent hair washers, which I am.   This has a lovely scent ~ very spa like with its cedar wood tones and lavender.   This is supposed to help thicken and volumize your hair, while preventing split ends.   Just the scent alone makes me love this!  Temple Spa is part of Gilchrist & Soames, which I have tried their Spa Therapy products  and I did enjoy those quite a bit!  Sample Size .84 oz  Value $1.73

Description:  This hair shampoo does more than just clean. Containing ingredients to condition the hair, to help resist split ends and damage, a ‘good hair day’ is exactly what you will have. Your hair will have added volume and be shiny, healthy and full of life. Your hair never felt so good. Conditions & cleanses at the same time. Prevents split ends and controls damage. Thickens and adds volume. Leaves hair soft & shiny. Moisturises scalp. Mediterranean plant extracts make it smell delicious. Helps control static.

Ingredients: Aqua, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Panthenol (Vitamin B), Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Oil, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Cedrus Atlantica (Cedarwood) Bark Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Flower Oil, Aniba Rosaeodora (Rosewood) Wood Oil, Pogostemon Cablin (Patchouli) Oil, Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flower Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Bulnesia Sarmienti (Guaiacwood) Oil, Parfum, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA, Benzophenone-4, Polysorbate 20, Citric Acid, Citronellol, Geraniol, Linallol, CI 19140, CI 14700.   cosDNA.com analysis

Temple Spa In Good Condition Hair Conditioner   Another product from Temple Spa ~ a conditioner for the shampoo!  This has quite a different scent, it is more minty with a hint of herbs and citrus.  Again, the scent is delicious, just like the shampoo.  This has wheat protein to help strengthen your hair shaft and condition them.  It is to help prevent fly-aways, softens and brings shine to your hair as well as leaving behind a lovey scent.   I am pretty happy to get this sample as I love getting hair products that I will use!  It is rare with subscription boxes ~ they like to send out really rich and heavy masks and creams for hair, and that doesn’t work for me.   Sample Size .84 oz Value $1.73

Description: For mint condition hair! No hair regime should be without a good conditioner to leave the hair in great condition. This product softens and shines as is conditions. It nurses split ends and damage caused by styling and blow drying. We’ve added special ingredients to reduce ‘fly away’ by thickening individual hair strands.  IN GOOD CONDITION reduces tangling, which eliminates the damage caused by combing out knots. Your hair will look and feel like a million dollars and if your hair does… you do too!  Softens, shines, hydrates and thickens. Nurses split ends and styling damage. Reduces ‘fly aways’. Antiseptic and antibacterial benefits. Peppermint, grapefruit and palmarosa refreshes the scalp. Rosemary may help treat a flaking scalp

Ingredients: Aqua, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cetrimonium Chloride, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, PEG-20 Stearate, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Dimethiconol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium), Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Lavandula Hybrida Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil, Cymbopogon Martini Oil (Palmarosa), Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, Magnesium Nitrate, Citric Acid, CI 61570 (Green 5), CI 19140 (Yellow 5), Limonene, Linalool cosDNA.com analysis

Pura Vida Lace Headband This was a bonus item ~ it looks like you could get a ponytail holder or the headband.  Since my profile states that my hair is too short for a ponytail, I received the headband.  It is a pretty denim color and stretchy…but not enough for my BIG head.  I have a larger head than most, and this headband is too tight.  When I read the reviews, I felt better about my big head, as many people were complaining how small and tight this headband is and how they gave it to their small children.  haha  If I had long hair, I might use this as a pony tail holder, wrapping it around several times, but I don’t.   Too bad, so sad…it doesn’t work for me.  I was looking forward to a new headband that I could use when I wash my face at night and do my skincare routine   1 headband Value $2.25

Description: The only thing better than headbands that don’t leave your head in a vice grip? Headbands that are comfy to wear and help charities that matter. These lace headbands, which come colorful packs of 8, are each adorned with dainty lace details and Pura Vida logo charm. The brand donates a portion of its profits from every purchase to support a range of charities, from ocean conservation to cancer research and children’s education

I also purchased an add-on item this month, rumbaTIME Orchard watch in smoky black.  I had a choice of black or pale pink.  I went with black as I would get more use out of it.

rumbaTIME Orchard Gloss Watch in Smoky Black  Someone had reviewed that the face is hard to read as the color of the crystal is so similar to the watch hands.  That is true ~ if I am in a dark room, I cannot read the time on this watch.  However, in other lighting conditions (bright, normal, indoors), I can tell the difference between the smoky black crystal and black hands.  However, rumbaTime should have made the hands in rose gold, to match the rose gold color in the bezel and time marker accents and also add a fluorescent dot on the hands as well, so it could be read in the dark.   That said, I really love the look of this watch ~ the oversized but thin face, with its inner rose gold metal bezel and outer black enamel bezel and rose gold accent time markers to the slim and thin silicone band that is easy to put on and take off.   My flash kept bouncing off the face, but I hope you can get a sense of how nice this watch is. You can also see when direct light is shone on the face, you can see that the smoky crystal almost looks purple and the hands are very visible.   I paid $25.00 for it and it seems it is $45.00 at Birchbox, so that was a great savings for me!

Description: Looking for a quality timepiece that exudes sexiness and style? This Orchard Gloss Watch from RumbaTime is the perfect choice. This watch, inspired by the ecletic Orchard Street in NYC and designed in NYC, features a thin yet durable silicone band and stainless steel casing with stratch-resistant mineral glass casing. The face contains an hour hand, minute hand, and second hand. This watch is water resistant up to 99 ft. Japanese quartz movement. Face: 1.4″ Diameter, Band: 9″ L x 0.4″ W

Hmmm, this box is slightly better than last month’s, as it at least had newer products in it.   I hate, loathe, dislike, do not want BB creams, Birchbox.  I keep telling you that in reviews by the low ratings I give them.   I really wished we had gotten the eyeko liquid eyeliner as was promised, as I would have used that ~ the Marcelle is probably a fine product, but I have so many eyeliners in that shade that I really do not need another one.  The shampoo and conditioner are really nice, like them and my PYS is perfect ~ I love Skyn Iceland products and eye gels = heaven.    I paid $10.00 for my box and received a value of $18.38,  which is not including the add-on product.

Next month is not looking to great either ~ our PYS is forced on us ~ the Stila liquid lipstick is the only item we can choose from ~ in THREE screaming bright, so not appropriate shades:  bright red (Beso), bright red-orange (Venezia), bright hot pink (Bella).  My gawd, BB.  Seriously?  Why couldn’t you have added at least one neutral friendly color to that mix, as Stila does have them: Aria, Dolce or Patina? Or at least a plum shade, like Amora?  Not everyone looks good in bright lip colors.   I was thinking of getting the curated box, but they forced the Stila product on us there in Bella plus it has Supergoop.  Huh.   Birchbox and I are now in a bad relationship.   Either BB goes to counseling or I pull up my big girl panties and leave for a while, until they straighten up their act.

Do you subscribe to Birchbox?  What did you get this month and what was your favorite item?

  1. I have’t had a good box from BB in some time. I got the Marcelle eyeliner in Blue Lagoon. I have green eyes, this does NOT work for me. The eye shadows in the mini Coastal scents palette were way too shimmery for me. I have long hair and the headband I can use as a pony tail holder, but guess I have a big head too as it doesn’t work as a headband. I got the Dr Jart’s microwater, which works great to remove my eye makeup. I also received the mango shampoo in the tiniest sample ever, I may get one wash out of it and the conditioner was a foil packet. And after next months reveal, thinking it is time for me to take a break from BB.

And I love the Skyn Iceland eye gels as well, got these from Ipsy and loved them. The work very well for me too. In fact I used them this morning as was out late last evening for a Stones concert, and boy did my poor eyes look rough after only a few hours sleep LOL.

    1. yeah, I am not sure what the target age of those headbands are for ~ it doesn’t seem that it fits many adult women heads! I would have liked to try the microwater, but it was hard for me to pass up on the eye gels this month.

Birchbox is going to have to pick it up soon for me. I love their point system, so I am holding out, as I almost have 500 points (50.00) to use, but once I cash those in, I might have to take a break again if they don’t get better for me.

  2. The headband is ridiculous, doesn’t fit my normal sized head either. I was gonna see if I could untie it to get it looser. My boxes, yes three, have been lame for months. I’m jumping back to one box next month. So tired of BB creams that are too dark and tiny sunscreens.
