Well, I think I might have to stick with curated, no surprise boxes from Birchbox. It seems lately, when I select a PYS instead of the guest curated box, I get a horrible box and this month was no exception to that rule. This month’s non-curated box was actually curated (haha) by Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere and I would be embarrassed if I was her. My box is craptastic.
May’s theme is Elevate Everyday. Curated by Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere, this month’s picks bring out-of-the-ordinary elegance to your daily routine.
My Box Revealed!
Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream I have very oily skin. My profile states this. This cream is for very dry skin. This can be reused as a body, hand or foot cream, but the sample is so small ~ so why bother? I have received this sample so many times in the past from other services and also in BB’s Mystery picks, and I am not impressed. This is such an old product from Birchbox. Yawn. Sample size .10 fl oz Value $1.28
Description: Professional Japanese mountain climbers use this all-over moisturizer to keep their skin protected when they’re scaling Mount Everest, so you know there must be something special about it. Invented by a pharmacist back in the 1950s, Yu-Be has been Japan’s top-selling skin cream for over 50 years. Great for head-to-toe hydration, it helps with all forms of stubborn dryness, including flaky red skin, chapped lips, and callused feet. The natural formula is free of ingredients like artificial dyes, fragrances, and petrolatum. It’s so gentle that even infants and kids can safely use it.

Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator This came out a few years ago and I never got it, so I traded for it. It is a fairly good product and I will use it. It is paraben free, sulfate free and 99% natural. I would not purchase it, however, as I like my powder enzymatic cleansers. However, once again, old stock, Birchbox. Deluxe Sample 20 g Value $5.67
Description: This powerful exfoliator mimics the results of professional microdermabrasion, minus the potential for redness and sensitivity. First, papaya enzymes break down dead cells while evening out your skin tone. Next, dermatologist-approved microderm crystals fade the appearance of fine lines and acne scars, leaving skin smooth and free of imperfections. Finally, aloe vera, coconut, and vitamins B and E nourish fresh skin to keep it free of irritation.
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Aluminum Oxide, Cetyl Alcohol, Decyl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Propanediol, Panthenol, Emulsifying Wax NF, Glyceryl Stearate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Tocopheryl Acetate, Papain, Parfum, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol cosDNA.com analysis
Beauty Protector Beauty Wash Body Cleanser I received a BP product last month and here we go again! I do not like BP products, I do not care for the scent. This cleanser has the same scent, so nope, not caring for it one bit. Birchbox may LOVE floral scents, but I do not. I think this is a new product, but considering that there was another body cleanser from Tokyo Milk that went out, I am a bit cheesed that I got a BP product, 2 months in a row Sample Size 1 oz Value $1.99
Description: We adore the refreshing clean and out-of-this-world floral scent of our Beauty Protector Protect & Shampoo so much, we’ve been seriously tempted to use it all over (don’t judge). So we couldn’t wait to lather up with the brand’s new body wash: The rich, foamy gel leaves our skin fresh and clean—and smells just as amazing as the rest of the line.
Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocomidopropyl Betanine, Glycerine, Fragrance/Parfum, Polysorbate 20, Glycol Distearate, Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, Cymbopogan Schoenanthus (Lemograss) Extract, Quercus Alba Bark Extract, Geranium Maculatum Extract, Symphytum Officinale Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hamamelis Virgiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Methylisothiazolinone cosDNA.com analysis
Coastal Scents® Revealed 3 Palette I have received other little samples of Coastal Scents and I am weary of receiving them. There isn’t anything groundbreaking about these shades, even though they are nice. There is a burgundy shimmer shade, a matte brown, a glitter lightly pigmented lavender and an antique gold shimmer. I just wish Birchbox would send out other eyeshadow samples besides Coastal Scents, as I feel that CS is not that pigmented, tons of fall out on their shades and kinda cheap. Sample Size Value $1.99
Description: They say good things come in threes—and now that we tried the latest palette from Coastal Scents®, a follow-up to the brand’s popular Revealed and Revealed 2, we’re inclined to agree. It has 20 shadows in a variety of new shades—from palest pink to rich goldenrod, vivid plum to deep brown—with a mix of matte, satin, and shimmery finishes. The smooth, powdered shadows glide on and blend easily.
Ingredients: Talc, Mica, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Magnesium Stearate, Kaolin, Dimethicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Polymethyl Methacrylate, o-Cymen-5-ol, BHT. May Contain: Mica and Titanium Dioxide, Silica, Iron Oxides, Chromium Hydroxide Green, Chromium Oxide Greens, Manganese Violet, Ultramarines, Ferric Ferrocyanide, FD&C Red 40 Al Lake, FD&C Yellow 5 Al Lake, FD&C Blue 1 Al Lake.
Harvey Prince Sea Salt Texturizing Mist This is my PYS and whereas this is another brand I am sick to death of (along with SuperGoop), I do love a good sea salt texturizing product. This is actually in one scent from their line that I do like, Hello, as it does not have any scents that I am allergic to. Hello is mix of citrus notes with Meyer lemon and Satsuma mandarin and floral notes with summer forsythia and pink plumeria. It is awfully small for a texturizing mist, however, and it isn’t all the way full, so this sample won’t really tell me how it work long term on my hair. Sample Size .27 oz Value .99 cents
Description: Getting beachy waves is as breezy as, well, a day at the beach with this salt-infused spray. It gives hair instant volume and lift for textured, piecey waves that look like you just got back from the shore (minus the tan lines and impossible-to-wash-off sand). What’s more, this formula is cruelty-free, vegan, and free of parabens and sulfates.
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Magnesium Sulfate, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Gaultheria Procumgens (Wintergreen) Leaf, Anthemis Nobilis Flower, Calendula Officinalis Flower, Citrus Limon Extract (lemon extract), Citrus Nobilis Extract (mandarin extract), Plumeria Acutifolia Flower Extract, Citric Acid cosDNA.com analysis
I truly feel depressed looking at this month’s box. Old, stale products, inappropriate skin products, cheap products and that damn Beauty Protector stuff – Birchbox, no matter how many times you shove that stuff down my throat, I HATE the scent. It makes me sneeze. When I think of the Tokyo Milk product and also some of their K-beauty items that they sent out this month, I wonder how I got this sad box. I will use the facial scrub and the sea salt mist, but the rest of the box is worthless to me ~ the eyeshadow colors are pretty, but I hate working with Coastal Scents shadows. I paid $10.00 for my box and received a value of $11.92, which is one of the lowest Birchbox’s I have ever received. Since I will only use 2 products, that means the worth of the box is $6.66 (oh no, sign of the devil!!) to me. Huh. Well, BB and I might need to rethink our relationship soon. I don’t understand this curation this month. Just awful.
Do you subscribe to Birchbox? What did you get this month and what was your favorite item?
