This is my second review of indie perfumes and this one is for Sweet Anthem, which was recommended to me by one of my readers 🙂

“Sweet Anthem Perfumes is a tiny studio where perfumer Meredith Smith makes bottled stories you can read on your skin. Founded in 2001 and, later, 2007, the studio produces an assortment of exclusive fragrances that you can’t find anywhere else. Based on legends, lore, literature, as well as scenes from Meredith’s own life, our perfumes are christened for the characters found within the stories that inspired them.
To boot, each fragrance we make is guaranteed 100% vegan and cruelty free. We bottle and pour everything in small batches, by hand, in West Seattle.”
Sweet Anthem has a variety of perfumes, for both ladies and gents, and within each category, breaks down by collection ~ citrus, floral, green, musk, smoke, spice, sweet, tea, tropics, woods. I like that type of organization, as I am highly allergic to rose and jasmine scented products, so this helps me search for the type of scents I really want to try out.
SA does sell sample vials, selecting from Eau de Parfum or perfume oils. I like oils, because a little goes a long way. I purchased two collection samples, Discover Smoke Under Glass and Discover The Great Northern, which came in little tins. The 1.5 mL samples are bigger sized than what I am used to, so these will last a while!
Discover The Great Northern ~ Part of the 2014 Summer Collection. These are all woodsy scents, which is why I wanted to try them. I happen to love all three and they are distinct scents.
Walden I don’t know what the antique florals are, but this is a very wonderful herbal-y musk. It smells very green and lush, like a freshly mowed lawn!
Heaven is under our feet and over our heads. Aquatic musks, vintage florals, and greenery everywhere.
Head Notes | Petit Grain, White Pepper |
Heart Notes | Vintage Florals |
Base Notes | Ambergris, Oakmoss |
Cooper ~ Just wonderful! I love the coffee scent to this.
What are all these magnificent trees? Nutty vetiver, smoky teak, coffee – black as midnight on a moonless night, and the transcendental Douglas Fir.
Head Notes | Fir Needle |
Heart Notes | Coffee |
Base Notes | Teak, Vetiver |
Elliot – this one I can really smell the pine scents. I feel like I am surrounded by pine trees.
Our favorite parts of summer here in Seattle. Strolling down by the waterfront, hikes through the Puget Sound rain forests, and days down on the beach — and just a hint of Seattle grunge.
Head Notes | Rain |
Heart Notes | Pinyon Pine |
Base Notes | Labdanum, Oakmoss |
Discover Smoke Under Glass ~ Part of 2014 Fall collection
Ella I can smell the tea notes and agarwood in this one. I really enjoy it a lot.
A dream is a wish your heart makes. Aldehydic lavender, smoky black tea and agarwood, strewn with pumpkin spices. Simple and stunning. Ella was designed by Katya N. for 2014’s Dream Fragrance Contest and was crowned the winner by our community! Katya earns eternal bragging rights, and our thanks for creating such a fantastic fragrance proposal.
Head Notes | Agarwood, Black Tea |
Heart Notes | Lavender |
Base Notes | Pumpkin |
Petra I can smell the smoke initially right off, with the myrrh following it. This is not one of my favorite scents.
American teenage nostalgia. Lingering candle smoke, tart cherry, a powdery, vintage style floral center, and a dry-down of real vanilla and resinous myrrh.
Head Notes | Candle Smoke, Cherry |
Heart Notes | Heliotrope, Immortelle |
Base Notes | Madagascar Vanilla, Myrrh |
Owl Alas, this has jasmine in it, so I cannot use it. If the jasmine was left out, this would have been very interesting to try! I love chai spices and juniper berries.
Tyto alba – essence of a barn owl. A spicy bird and a tale from the rafters. Indolic jasmine, softened by mimosa and black and white ambers, warmed with Chai spices and juniper berry, all on a base of earthy, grassy, vetiver.
Head Notes | Chai Spices, Juniper Berry |
Heart Notes | Jasmine, Mimosa |
Base Notes | Black and White Amber |
I also have the Sophie solid perfume (not pictured) and this is one of my favorites! This order is ending on a fantastic note! I think this is the one that I will purchase full size, along with Ella and one of the woods scents.
For the last of the red hot dames. A veritable pastiche of plummy, deep fruit, smoky blossoms, and expensive woods with a golden crown of amber on the dry down.
Head Notes |
Benzoin |
Heart Notes | Black Currant, Neroli |
Base Notes | Agarwood, Amber |
All in all, I really enjoyed my scents from Sweet Anthem. I think Meredith is an extremely creative person, both in her scents and the descriptions of them! The packaging for these collections is very unique with the little slider tins. That makes her perfumes very portable and no major risk of damage.
Have you tried Sweet Anthem perfumes? If so, what are your favorite scents? I am very interested to know ~ please comment below 😀 Hey, that rhymed!

So glad you like SA’s monthly offerings thus far. I am loving mine! I think I have the same tastes in fragrances as you ( except that I am allergic to lavender). And I think the solid perfume we got in our SA sub definitely has lavender in it. Made me really sad.

I’m new-ish to Sweet Anthem (I started subscribing to their subscription thing earlier this year) but I’ve tried most of the ones on this list, and Walden is one of my absolute favorites. It’s just so … fresh. Petra is weird but it kind of grew on me. It smelled like smokey marzipan when I first applied it, which is either delicious or awful?
