What I subscribe to

At this moment in time…

ispy @ ipsy.com

This is a monthly service at $10.00 per month.  Free shipping to the USA.  ispy subscribers will receive a really cool glam bag which has 4-6 products – deluxe samples and full size beauty products.  They use your beauty profile (which you can change at any time), your likes and your reviews on their site into their ipsyMatch algorithm to come up with what you will receive in your bag. Hint:  The ipsyMatch algorithm works by taking your answers and inputting into an equation to select the BEST match for you out of all the possible combinations your answers gave.  This means that the more answers you give – in other words, the more items you selected per page of the quiz – the more combinations the algorithm has to choose from. Because of this, ipsy has found the highest rate of success when users have narrowed down their choices to around  1 to 2 per page (3 if you absolutely must). Join me on ipsy and subscribe to the Glam Bag! You get 4-5 beauty products every month delivered to your door, for just $10. Michelle Phan curates the bags! Check it out here: http://www.ipsy.com/?refer=u-hgwmm620wkfx19c6

eco-emi @ ecoemi.com

eco-emi is a $15.00 a month subscription to eco-friendly products.  They range from beauty, to skincare, to snacks.  You get at least 5 samples.  Most of the samples are deluxe samples, but some are travel sized.   This service neatly and creatively packs your items into a small priority box and it is very fun and exciting to see what you are going to get.  I love this service – they seem to go out of the way to make their boxes unusual.  They do a theme each month and you never know what you are going to get until you get the box!   No sneak peaks.  They mail out mid-month.   They do supply coupons and promo codes in the box to the products you receive in your box.  I highly recommend this box.  They do not do referral or points.

julep @ julep.com

Their monthly box service is $19.99 a month.  You receive new nail colors, favorites and beauty products.  Your boxes are picked based on your beauty profile, of which there are several:

  • Modern Beauty:  2 full size beauty products in every box

  • Boho Glam, Bombshell or Classic with a Twist:  these 3 beauty profiles will receive 2 limited edition nail colors and one full size beauty product in every box

  • It Girl:  3 limited edition nail colors in every box.

One of the nice things about this service is that you get to preview you your “upcoming” box on the 20th of each month and you can change your beauty profile if you like the “other” profile items better.  You can also skip a month if you do not like that month’s options.  That is very cool.  You earn “Jules”, points, that can be redeemed for a free box. Green Grab Bag @  greengrabbag.com

I just purchased this and I have not yet received my box.  This is another eco-friendly service and you can either subscribe monthly for $15.00  and they pick out the products for you or you can build your own green bag.  I did the build your own and you can pick from a variety of samples and can build a $15.00, $25.00 or $35.00 box.  This is the only beauty service where you can pick your own samples with the build your own.  Their monthly box states that you will receive at least 6 natural, organic and/or vegan beauty samples.   Even if you subscribe to their monthly box, you can always build your own box at any time.  I will say this, their customer service is wonderful.  I had some issues with my box and they let me pick out 2 additional samples free of charge, because the shipping was going to be delayed by a few days.

QVC Beauty Tube @ qvc.com

I still subscribe to the QVC Beauty Tube, but will not be renewing after my next shipment.   This actually is a great service if you like the items that QVC sells – Mally, Smashbox, WEN, Philosophy, and so on.  The 7 samples in each tube  they give you are deluxe, travel and even full size.  The majority are travel and full size items.  However, I do not like most of those vendors for makeup and beauty products, so I kept one or two items and gave the rest away.  You also get a great pamphlet with instructions on how to use your products plus the New Beauty magazine.   This service can be purchased once or you could go on Auto Delivery, where it would be sent out to you every other month at the cost of 29.96 + 6.72 shipping + state tax!! My beauty tube total was $38.55, which is not a good deal as I didn’t care for the majority of the products. However, if you really enjoy those products sold on QVC, which are pretty popular, you may love this.  As the beauty tube order number always changes, just go to qvc.com and search for Beauty Tube.  If you do not find it, that means it is sold out and you just have to keep on looking.  Update:  I  cancelled it.  I decided to go with Blush Beauty Box instead.

birchbox @ birchbox.com

UPDATE:  I HAVE SO CANCELLED THIS BOX.  September’s box was just gawd awful.  And this was after working with them to update my beauty profile.   I know people get great boxes with them.  I am just not one of them.  Buh-bye.

UPDATE:  I have renewed my birchbox subscription.   I felt it was not fair to cancel on them without telling birchbox why and giving them the chance to improve.  I have emailed birchbox with my complaints and I will put them on notice.  I will blog my birchbox’s going forward and if the subscription improves, I will keep it.

I no longer subscribe to birchbox – see UPDATE ABOVE.  I have renewed.   I was a member for over a year and while they did have some interesting products that I enjoyed, I noticed that other members were getting much better items than I was.   I was always receiving leave in conditioners, which since I have baby fine straight OILY hair, was a total waste for me.  I also kept receiving bright red lip colors, which probably isn’t the fault of birchbox – those are the sample they receive from the vendors.    It seemed to me that they were not taking the likes/dislikes on the reviews seriously. There were a few items, like I said, that were really nice and are in my daily beauty routine:

However, the size of the samples were not deluxe and my products were always some stuff that I had no interest in – and my friends didn’t want them either.  For $10.00 a month, I found that ipsy was a much better deal and I also liked eco-emi better as well, even though that is 5.00 more.  I will still purchase items from their site, as for every dollar you spend, you get one point.  For every 100 points, you get a 10.00 credit off your order.  If you subscribe to birchbox, make sure you review all of the samples they give you – for each sample reviewed, you get 10 points.
